Unpopular opinion… but if California is not happy with an aftermarket cat, state should pay for the difference. Exhaust gas concentrations differ in a very minor way with a few percents (in most reasonable places they are both really under the limit), which does not justify the 5-10x more cost.
They are afraid of a few percents of extra CO and NO but they are not afraid of a car full of valuable non-renewable materials going to rust on a scrapheap due to repair being uneconomical which could be used for another 5-10 year with still lower emissions than most of the other vehicles out there… If this is reasonable, I am a complete idiot.
